Your Questions Answered
How do you know if you can be hypnotized?
Almost everyone can be hypnotized to some degree. Everyday examples of light hypnosis include when we have driven a certain distance in our car and arrive at our destination without remembering the process of how we got there. This state can also be reached when we are absorbed in a good book or movie.
Can everyone experience a regression?
The regression experience is different for different people. Those people who can only reach a light state of hypnosis sometimes require repeated sessions and/or practices in between sessions. Other people are born with the ability to reach deep levels of hypnosis very quickly and easily. Most people can reach a state where they gain access to the unconscious. In this state, memories both early in this life and in previous ones become accessible.
What are the memories like?
A wide range of experiences is possible. Some people are able to have visual memories, while others have more awareness of physical sensations, sounds, or other senses. The intensity of the experiences also varies. Some people get pictures of events or people. Others can see a scene develop as though they are watching a movie. Still others have the sense they are experiencing it again.
How does recovering old memories help people? Doesn't it just add more stress to a person's life?
Remembering traumatic and stressful experiences can bring about much emotion. Whatever discomfort may occur can easily be managed and controlled by the structure of the process and by the wishes of the person being regressed. In most cases, because of the inherent wisdom of our unconscious, and the psychological protective mechanisms that most people have in place, one tends only to access memories that can be handled and that are relevant to current circumstances. Exceptions can usually be detected ahead of time. This leads to the next question.
Is hypnosis ever harmful or dangerous to people?
As long as the doctor treating takes a good history, no. A small percentage of people have problems or conditions, which are contraindications for hypnosis. That is one of the reasons an initial visit before hypnosis is necessary.
Can regression therapy help physical problems?
Yes. There are many well-documented, often dramatic examples in which people have been helped with physical problems, even chronic ones. Examples include migraine headaches, other pain, asthma, obesity, and many more.
How do I know if what comes to my mind in hypnosis is really a past life memory?
It is almost always impossible to be certain. Sometimes specific names and dates make it possible for a person to pursue verification. Often the specificity and realness of the experience will make one feel certain. It can be argued, however, that what is accessed are fantasies and memories from movies etc. Whatever the truth of the matter, the experience has dramatic beneficial effects.
